Preppy Tattoo

Every summer when I receive my lovely tax bill, I become instantly, and temporarily dedicated to using our public library, public parks, etc.

One such public park is called Rolling Hills Water Park. Actually, it is a really nice water park in a beautiful setting. It is clean, simple, and reasonably priced. I said, "hey kids, we are going to the water park for your brother's birthday". I packed up my group and we hit the wave pool, lazy river, fancy sprinkler area, etc. all for $8.00 for the day.

Since we mostly hang out at our private clubs in the summer, I had forgotten what public really means --the rules of modesty are gone.

Here are a few questions for you readers, and these are not meant to be mean sound, just statements from a sheltered mother of three:

Tattoos--I did not realize they were so popular. When was it acceptable for 70+ year old women have them and wear them proudly? Secondly, when did it become acceptable for severely overweight people to wear bikinis? There was not just one or two violators of this rule either. Is flaunting obesity in style? You know the saying, "love your body, and be proud of it"...well, it was in full form, and I mean full form today.

I was listening to the radio (tattoo discussion) and this woman stated that even though she has several easily visible tattoos, people should not judge her and we all need look inside of her. Well, I am sorry....if you choose this path, you will be judged and categorized the rest of your life. You rarely see tattoos on successful business leaders, politicians, etc.(unless they are a little off).

Remember girls, when you are pledging that sorority and in weak moment a group thinks it would be fun to put those Greek letters on your ankle, think again. Of course, Kappas would never do this.

LOL I just blogged about this- I told my daughter if she ever got one, my heart would stop beating and I'd die- think I went too far? Her face said: I BELIEVE YOU!

AHHAHAHA Your blog made me laugh so hard! I love it! How funny!! I have been wanting to do a tattoo post for a long time! SOO SICK OF SEEING OF THE "TRAMP STAMP" ALL SUMMER

I agree with you about the tattoos. My sorority has pretty clear rules about tattoos: no letter tattoos! if you want to get one of our mascot or one of our symbols, it better be tastefully done (as tasteful as a tattoo can be) and very easily hidden. to my knowledge no one in my Chapter has done that.

Completely agree with you about tatoos. It is so funny when people get a tatto and somehow think that their tatoo is better than other peoples and even tasteful.

AMEN!! And I have insulted my fair share of people...but REALLY? I hate tatoo's.

OMG Tell Me About It! I am disgusted at all the flaunting of strange tattoos in strange places... (not to mention plus-size women in petite-size bikinis.) I also have issues with strange strange body piercings.

And the only times I've worn my Greek letters (I am a Theta) on my body is when we've painted them on for Rush or Panhellenic sporting events.

Welcome back from the pool. Pray you can make it through the rest of summer.

Hope you don't mind. I linked this to my last blog post.

LOL you should have seen the overweight girl with her butt crack sticking out of her bikini hanging out with her boyfriend the ENTIRE time we were on our honeymoon. I was embarassed for her and apalled that no one told her, um, your butts hanging out!

Ick! I noticed this recently when I went to a water park as well. I agree with your post 100%.

I dont think that is the Lacoste gator, I think its more along the lines of Univ of Fla. Not the preppiest of tattos

I am a pretty small and fit girl (5'2" when I stand up straight) but if I am having a fat day you better believe I am not going to subject someone else to that! As for the tattoos I have a friend who just got a the polo symbol on his chest...Clueless.

I wanted to let you know I changed my URL as well. It is now OhIJustLoveIt.blogspot.com instead of southerngirlinthecity. It apparently didn't update in reader.

Ahahaha. I absolutely HATE when my friends say that they want a tattoo. Do you really want to have that when you're 80? I'm all for temporary tattoos though. Vineyard Vines ones especially.

I really have an issue with overwieght women in bikinis! I also dislike overweight men in Speedos! This is trend in Naples, FL where many Europeans vacation. Not always a pretty sight!

And tattoos? No way!

I couldn't agree with you more, we go to a country club when we want to swim, and you don't see the tattoos and larger people in tiny bikinis as often as you do a public place, but when I do go to the wavepool, the tattoos start popping up all over the place. I just turn up my nose, I'm not trying to be snotty or snobby, I just think tattoos give the wrong impression.

Big girls in bikinis. I wouldn't wear one & I'm have the size of some women who do. Seriously, they shouldn't make them in sizes larger than 8.

I agree with you on tattoos and how they make people look. You can't tell me that when you get an image permanently stamped on your body, you're not trying to say something. Physically appearance sends a signal, no matter who you are!

Personally, I don't have a problem with something tasteful and discreet, but I think people have stopped considering their image or long term implications of their decisions.

TOTALLY, 100% agree with you (including the Kappa statement!)! I have never understood a tatoo, I guess if I was so obsessed with something I would just wear a t-shirt, but put the thing on my body. My mother and grandmother used to always tell me their was a shortage in waitresses when I asked about tatoos and getting my ears pierced (mother finally gave in and let me do my ears when we lived in Honduras and I got pairs of pearl, diamond and sapphire earrings as gifts).

Ugh, I hate tattoos. I would just never, ever commit to something that I couldn't undo. I mean, I know you can get them lasered, but you can still see where someone had a tattoo. Ew.

I have never liked permanant alterations of your body- Especially tatoos. I might be an extremeist because I don't even have my ears pierced- but I just don't think it is my style. Maybe some day I would get some diamond or pearl studs but I stress maybe.
My younger sister recently got a large tatoo on her wrist. she has always tried to be the black sheep of the family, but she is just surrounded by so much positive reenforcement that nothing she does seems to irk anyone- I feel like this attempt at rebellion (from what?-private school-paid for, college education-paid for, rent post college-mummy and daddy pay for, cellphone-paid,parents that think you are beautiful, funny and smart etc.)will only end up hurting her in the future. I know she thinks she knows what sort of life she wants now- but trust me- things can change your outlook in a matter of years. My priorities and my style at 29 is so different than it was at 21. Good luck to you if you have visable tatoos- I hope you DON'T hate them in 10 years. yikes!

Good lord. Whenever we travel we are horrified by what shows up at the airport. Jean shorts? When the hell did those come back? I loathe tatoos. HATE. I will not allow Landon or Coco to get one ever!

I am strangely intrigued by tattoos...on other people. They are almost freakish.

One of my preppiest friends just got one on the back of her neck. I swear she must have been having a mid-life crisis. We're 44 for god's sake!
