FORMAL DRESSES FOR TEENS

Well, we have gone to Nordstom, Saks, Macy's VonMaur, JCrew, Forever21, Juicy Couture, Betsy Johnson, and probably several more stores that I have blanked out.

What is up with dresses for teenagers?

They are all so flammable and shiny!

My daughter does not like rhinestones, glitter, netting and polyester glossy material. Guess what.... there is nothing else out there.

My daughter did reluctantly purchased and return and then purchased another BCBG Max Azria dress for her winter formal. A little expensive for a teenage dress, but we were desperate. I have to give her credit because when you put this the BCBG section next to the teen section, it is such a contrast in quality and she would not even go in the teen section--thank you retail merchandisers.

This is one that she purchased and she is going to wear the tie as a caveman strap (Can you say Wilma Flintstone?)--thank you Michelle Obama (Vogue Cover Girl)--symmetry in shoulder cover is now gone. It actually looks cute on her because she is only 5'4 (unlike this model) so it is not so short.

When we were in Chicago, she actually tried on a Juicy Couture dress that looked cute on her.We should have purchased it but, now she doesn't like it. Two more days until the formal--no more time to look at the same 3 dresses.

Where do you purchase cute dresses for teenage girls--they will not shop at Lilly Pulitzer or J Crew--sorry, that would be too easy.

When I was in high school I always went into the woman's dress department as opposed to the juniors, because the dresses were classier. Sometimes they also have really great sales! Good Luck!

Well, I applaud her for not shopping in the junior department. For that really special dress, the smaller boutiques are great! Very pricey, but worth it. And they are usually privately owned | managed in that city only. Ex. in Knoxville, TN there are boutiques named Elle, Christie's, Obligato. But do tell her to keep her eye on J. Crew and Lilly - she might be surprised. Oh, one other thing. . . PD and I have bought a cute dress here and there when there was no special occasion, but we just knew there would be and the dress was too good to pass up!! {sorry so long}

This post brings back bad memories; I hated shopping for prom and formal dresses in high school. I remember going to one of those awful, overpriced formal dresswear boutiques after searching and searching in every department store. Looking back, of all my formal dresses my favorite was a long midnight blue Tahari I found at Marshall's.

I never shopped in the juniors section. I hate all the glitter and shiny. I always got my dresses at Bloomingdales.

If only Jacobson's still existed....back in the day when Miss J was around. Good luck with your search!

I guess girls don't sew anymore. That is what I used to do for my formal dresses. Since I only have boys they just wait until the girl tells them what color of tie to wear. Last year I could not find a purple tie so I ended up renting one. Was that ridiculous or what? I definitely had it easier. Hang in there! :)

Sounds like she has great taste! The only ideas I can think of re. dresses would be looking on net-a-porter.com and searching either under designer / colour or price. There is a good selection and obviously you are not then restricted to whatever is available in your nearest town. Good Luck!

I have a college girl and a fifteen year old. they are both preppy sporty... yet I can't get them to buy J.crew style dresses or much lily either.
The college girl is a bit better now. She likes vineyard vine dresses. But they both mostly wear BCBG. I think it is the Gossip Girl influence. We have a lot of luck at Bloomingdales or their cousin's closet :)

I didn't do the 'prom dress' thing either for any of the proms I went to... Maggie London is amazing, a but pricey but Nordstroms Rack can have good sales with her... Also, try to get your daughter to go vintage. A wore a vintage 1950s dress to my ex's senior prom and got stopped by girls and parents all night for compliments.

The junior section. Yuck. It's like a staring into the closet of one of the Bratz dolls.
What about Jessica McClintock?
p.s. ~ There's a treat for you on my blog!

I always shopped at small boutiques for prom and formal dresses. It's hard b/c you don't want to show up in a dress that someone else has... a teenagers worst nightmare. In my hometown we had a small boutique that would only sell one dress style to one girl per high school. Even if you really liked a dress they might tell you, "You can't buy it, someone from your high school has already purchased it." That was nice.

In college, my mom made some of my formal dresses. If you can find a cheap seamstress, it's a really fun idea. I got to pick the fabric and style. Of course, my mom liked it to b/c the dress she made was too short or slutty. :)

I found many options for teenagers dresses at Macys... I love their recent spring dresses collection...
