FIElD HOCKEY

Well, we are almost at the end of a wonderful and fun field hockey season. What a great and exciting sport. My oldest daughter plays on our JV team and my other on her middle school team. My oldest daughter is off to a tournament today and I have never seen her so excited.

We encourage our girls and son to be on at least one team sport and do one individual sport. My oldest daughter plays field hockey and tennis (individual). She is debating about playing basketball this winter. My other daughter plays field hockey, golf and dances. She is debating about playing tennis or soccer at school in the spring. When referring to team sports, I think of a sport that you interact with your team the entire game (swim, golf, tennis, etc., are not considered teams sports).

Our friend's daughters are playing field hockey at Brown and Dartmouth (next year). Pretty impressive! Also, field hockey is really not crowded like soccer where you have 150 girls trying out for the varsity teams. There is not travel involved until you get to high school (unlike soccer). We are fortunately that we have access to the University of Michigan field hockey team and facility.

Anyway, a great sport and a very fun season. We found this Hot Chocolate container at Dunham's last night to keep B warm during the tournament.

I totally agree about encouraging sports! Both of my kids played sports from elementary school all through college (their fraternity/sorority intramural teams). It is the best thing that we can do for them. My daughter also danced, and at age 24 she still takes dance classes because she has decided that dance is one of the best things to keep her in shape. She also plays golf which is great b/c it is a lifetime sport...as does my son. They will be active I am sure for the rest of their lives. Sounds like a fun day for you! I so enjoy your blog.

I played FH in high school! I was far from great, but it was so much fun. My school's varsity team was amazing and it was really something to watch those girls play. They won New England's and a number of girl went on to play at Brown and Duke. My mother was all about encouraging the sports too. It is a great way to learn to get along with others and is such fun too.

I played lacrosse in High School and adored it. I think you learn so much by being on a team. Self heating hot chocolate?! Have I died and gone to heaven?

You are so wise Miss PPPG, encouraging them to do both the individual and team sports. They will be so much better off learning about themselves and others this way.

Good for you! (And them as well!)

I played field hockey in high school and loved it, even though I wasn't very good! I still have a big ole scar on my shin (right above where the top of my shin guard ended)from an opponent missing the ball and connecting with my leg instead.

Yes, Joan's fiance is officially a creep and pervert. I really hope she kicks him to the curb...but I think she has really been hurt by the Roger deal, don't you? I think she really cared for him... They really need to write him out of the script. Don't need any of that...there is enough that is disturbing now...

I played field hockey and lacrosse in middle and high school. I absolutely loved it and miss the girls on my team. Pretty much everyone in my extended family does sports, but the individual ones, like swimming. But my parents always encouraged team sports, thank goodness. Sometimes, I'll get my old friends together so we can just pass around or play in mini tournaments.

Playing Hockey would be so cool! I think my son would love it. He is rough and tough. Too bad Hockey is not one of our sports in South Georgia. We do have a diving team and many of our divers have received scholorships from major universities. My daughter dived for a little over year and she wanted to stop and start Tennis (along with soccer). She seems to excel at tennis, so I'm glad we gave her the opportunity and did not push her to continue diving. My son loves baseball, and maybe when he is a little older he will try the diving team. I enjoy your blog. Have a great weekend.

My oldest daughter was a dancer and she is absolutely uncoordinated in every sport--cannot kick a ball, hit one with a tennis racquet (and watching her try to hit a softball...good for a laugh!) The summer between her junior and senior year of high school, she spent six weeks at the Governor's Honors Program studying French, but they also had to declare a "minor" so she chose Fitness. She said the only sport she could do was Field Hockey and she loved it (I think once she did the research, she also though the little skirts were a really cute uniform, too). Lacrosse has just taken off here, but field hockey is still only played by a few club teams, so she never found a place to play.
