I STRONGLY DISLIKE SCHOOL POTLUCKS!

Park Avenue Potluck: Recipes from New York's Savviest Hostesses

I am sure that I am not alone on this one, I am not a mass-potluck-kind-of-girl. I love parties and most social functions, but there are good reasons for restaurant inspectors in our society, people are not always careful when they are cooking food. In terms of food preparation, some people do not know any better, others try to get ways with dropping a chicken on the ground then trying to serve it to guests (this is actually a restaurant story), others just are not paying attention that cat is wagging its tail in the batter (while on the counter). If you have ever sampled frosting while making a cake, then my point is made.

Our public elementary school loves potlucks...one in the fall and one in the winter. Three hundred kitchens with 300 different standards. When we go the a school function that are potlucks, my children always eat first and I tell them to not eat the food..it never works though.

On the hand, potlucks with close friends are fine. A friend of mine gave me this book for Christmas and I love it. I thought I would share it with you.

Note: The irony of all this is that when my daughter's private school catered a dinner for french week, several people contracted food poisoning. You never know!

The last potluck I went to resulted in horrifying repercussions on my gastric system, even though I was VERY picky about what I nibbled on. I couldn't agree with you more.

The last pot luck I went to (Which had food from random people I did not know) I ended up with the worst case of food poisoning I have ever experienced!
So I am with you on not loving a pot luck!

I also really dislike potlucks. My work does one around Christmas time, and I dread it. I always make two dishes and only eat what I make.

My sister always arrives early so that she can see who brings in what dish. Down here they are not call potluck, they are called "covered dish". YOu do not go to a "potluck", you go to a "covered dish".

Will only eat what I brought to the potluck and instruct everyone in the family to do the same!

Hilarious. I have never given 1 thought to a potluck being a germfest. I've been to them and haven't gotten sick. But I don't really like potluck-style and when I invite guests over, they are told to just bring themselves. My husband has a friend from college and anytime we are invited to her home for brunch she always assigns people to bring things. I am usually stuck bringing a fruit salad or bagels. I think it's so tacky she does this. Don't have parties if you can't manage the meal. OK, off my soapbox now.

When we entertain, we like to provide everything too..we see it as treating people and enjoy putting it all together. Some people are pretty persistant on bringing something and really (for some reason ) don't enjoy themselves unless they are contributing in some way. Some friends have trouble entertaining and doing it all themselves. We have a fun group that does a potluck at the pool on Sunday nights for Coals & Ice. Our pool club provides coals and cooks your meat and veggies and provides ice for drinks. We bring various assigned items and share with a group. Because this is not at someone's home, it is a lot of fun and easy.

Funny Post! I got sick once in high school from a potluck and after that was very leery!

I was going to order this book way back when Melissa Morris had it on her blog and never got too it! Thanks for reminding me.
